Building neighborhood pride, one traffic box at a time.

Langley Park
Traffic Boxes

Langley Park, MD is a small suburb just outside of Washington DC, with a diverse community of immigrant residents, primarily from Central America. In an effect to add beauty and elevate neighborhood pride, a series of 16 traffic box wraps were commissioned to transform utility boxes into a uplifting beacons of joy.

Designs take inspiration from the textile designs of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, tile patterning from Nicaragua, and woven baskets of West Africa, creating a graphic quilt that celebrates the immigrant heritage of the neighborhood.

The boxes also featured super bold block lettered typography amplifying the messages “Langley Park Love” and “Nuestro Langley Park Nuesto Futuro.”

As part of this project, Studio Cornelius also led a block lettering typography class for Langley Park residents, and worked with local high school students, helping them create a group design for a traffic box.

Designed in collaboration with Casa De Maryland and the Hyattsville CDC.

A set of accompanying murals were also commissioned to carry a message of hope during the pandemic.
